Students and Teachers Escape Death as 4-Storey School Building Collapses in Ogba, Lagos
In a heart-stopping incident that underscores the ongoing issue of structural failures in Nigeria’s urban areas, a four-storey building housing Yemco Nursery, Primary, and Comprehensive College collapsed on Monday, March 9, 2026, in the Aguda area of Ogba, Lagos State. The structure, located on Adu Street behind County Hospital, came down around midday, but miraculously, no lives were lost as approximately 600-700 students and staff were evacuated just minutes before the disaster. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as cracks began appearing on the walls and stones started falling from the building, prompting screams and a frantic rush to safety. One resident noted that nearby passersby alerted the school, allowing teachers to quickly clear out the premises. Videos circulating on social media capture the terrifying moments: in one clip, students can be seen streaming out of the building in an orderly yet urgent line along a narrow alley lined with parked cars, viewed from an overhead perspective. The footage shows groups of people, including children in uniforms, hurrying away as the evacuation unfolds. You can watch this evacuation video here:
Another harrowing video shows the actual collapse: the pinkish-brown building stands intact at first, with small shops and debris at its base. Suddenly, cracks widen, parts of the structure give way, and the entire edifice crumbles in a cloud of dust, sending rubble cascading down. The dust plume engulfs the area, but thankfully, the site appears clear of people. View the collapse footage here:
The Lagos State Government has swiftly launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) warning property owners about adhering to safety regulations. Initial reports suggest the building, which also included residential units, had shown signs of distress, possibly due to substandard construction materials or poor maintenance – issues that have plagued Lagos, where over 100 building collapses were recorded in the past decade alone. While no fatalities occurred, some students sustained minor injuries during the stampede to evacuate.
This event echoes previous tragedies in Nigeria, such as the 2019 Ita-Faji school collapse that claimed 20 lives, highlighting a systemic problem with unregulated building practices and inadequate inspections. Residents in Ogba expressed relief but called for stricter enforcement of building codes to prevent future incidents.

As investigations continue, this narrow escape serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of infrastructure in densely populated areas like Lagos. Stay tuned for updates.
